Thesp to topline Leon pic

CANNES — Javier Bardem will topline the Elias Querejeta-produced “Mondays in the Sun,” to be directed by Fernando Leon (“Barrio”).

The teaming of Bardem, the Oscar-nominated star of “Before Night Falls,” and Leon, an acclaimed young Spanish director, makes “Mondays” one of the hottest new titles now coming out of Spain.

“Mondays” will be Bardem’s first film since he starred in John Malkovich’s Lola-produced “The Dancer Upstairs,” which is now in post.

Leon’s last film, “Barrio,” grossed $2.5 million in Spain.

The $4 million “Mondays” will begin its 13-week shoot in Spain in September. Leon and Ignacio del Moral penned the screenplay.

Pic will be co-produced in association with Mediapro and Continental Producciones.

“Mondays” centers on a group of unemployed friends struggling to make ends meet in a northern part of Spain that’s going through economic woes.

Via Digital has pay TV rights for Spain.
