Nielsen joins ‘Pulp’ pair for ‘Basic’

Project centers on disappearance investigation

Connie Nielsen is negotiating to join “Pulp Fiction” pair John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in the John McTiernan-directed drama “Basic.”

Pic, a co-production of Phoenix Pictures and Intermedia, centers on a DEA agent’s investigation of the mysterious disappearance of a legendary Army range drill instructor and several cadets. Project is produced by Phoenix-based Orbit Entertainment Group, based on a script by James Vanderbilt. “Basic” is fully financed by Intermedia, whose principals, Nigel Sinclair, Guy East and Moritz Borman, will exec produce.

Several actresses had been circling the role, but negotiations began late last week with Nielsen, best known for “Gladiator.” The actress, who’s repped by WMA and manager Estelle Lasher, recently starred with Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro in William Friedkin’s “The Hunted” for Lakeshore.
