Tupac feted in upcoming biopic

HOLLYWOOD — MTV Films and Amaru Entertainment have partnered to produce a feature documentary about slain rapper Tupac Shakur.

Docu will include a never-before-seen Shakur concert, home movie and video footage, rare photos and exclusive excerpts from his poetry, journals and personal letters. His music and unreleased songs also will be featured.

Lauren Lazin, veep of MTV News and Docs, will direct and produce. Afeni Shakur, founder-CEO of Amaru Entertainment/Amaru Records and the late rapper’s mother, will exec produce with MTV prexy Van Toffler and MTV Films senior veep David Gale.

Preston L. Holmes (“Malcolm X”) and Karolyn Ali also will produce. The film is in production and skedded for a 2003 theatrical release.

“Tupac was an extraordinary artist who continues to have a profound influence on music, young people and hip-hop culture,” Lazin said.

Docu’s soundtrack from Amaru/Interscope Records will be released in conjunction with the film and the first official Tupac Shakur biography from Pocket Books/MTV Books.
