ROME — Fresh from receiving the Palme d’Or for “The Son’s Room” from the Cannes Film Festival jury, Italian actor-director Nanni Moretti will see jury duty from the other side — on the competition panel at the 58th Venice Intl. Film Festival this fall.
Having been approached by Venice fest director Alberto Barbera to judge the main competition, Moretti reportedly said he would agree to serve on the jury only if he won one of the top prizes at Cannes.
Moretti’s relationship with the Venice fest has been an ambivalent one since his 1989 feature “Palombella Rossa” was rejected for selection, eventually screening to acclaim in the independently programmed Critics Week section. Since then, the director’s films all have preemed internationally at Cannes.
Other members of the Venice fest jury will be announced July 27 in Rome. The event runs Aug. 29-Sept. 8.
