Morena’s ‘Spy’ tops ambitious pic slate

Figueras to write English-lingo thriller

CANNES — Marcelo Figueras, screenwriter of acclaimed Argentine pic “Plata Quemada,” is writing the screenplay of the $9 million English-lingo “Time Spy” for Spain’s Morena Films, its most ambitious pic to date.

The film will have a “retro decadent” style, said Juan Gordon, Morena’s co-CEO, responsible for feature film production.

“We are very proud to be working with such a talented writer as Marcelo Figueras, and I anticipate this will not be the last project we will work on” together, he added. Morena said he intends to offer the project to a top Spanish director.

Morena Films also is prepping a second, untitled project, which centers on the sinking of a Spanish submarine in 1936. Spanish film writer Alberto Porlan is attached to pen that Spanish-lingo project.

Launched in September 1999 by Gordon and Alvaro Longorria, Morena boasts an eclectic slate of international projects and lower-budget pics by first-time Spanish directors. Three of the latter now nearing are delivery.

Fox will open Jorge Iglesias’ urban youth comedy “Fish People” in Spain July 13.

Described by Gordon as a kind of “Madrid-set ‘Short Cuts,’ ” Alvaro Garcia Capelo’s “Canicula” is bound for completion by September.

” ‘After Hours’ meets ‘The Party,'” per Gordon, “The Best Is Yet to Come” is skedded for a Christmas release. It is helmed by Jose Semprun and David Blanco.
