Lions Gate reps rights to ‘Psycho’ sequel

Freeman to helm, Kunis to star

CANNES — Lions Gate Films Intl. has come aboard to rep international rights to thriller “American Psycho II” starring Mila Kunis and directed by Morgan J. Freeman.

The film, produced and fully financed by Lions Gate Films, is set to begin production in mid-May in Toronto.

Written by Karen Craig and Alex Sanger and produced by Ernie Barbarash, the co-producer of “American Psycho,” Sanger will oversee the project for Lions Gate. Sequel takes place at a college campus in which Kunis plays a college freshman and survivor of serial killer Patrick Bateman.

Lions Gate fully financed and distribbed the original “American Psycho,” based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis that stars Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Mathis and Reese Witherspoon. The film grossed $15 million in the U.S. and more than $17 million abroad.

At Cannes, Lions Gate Intl. is also repping such titles as “Monster’s Ball,” starring Billy Bob Thornton, Halle Berry and Heath Ledger with Marc Foster directing; and the action thriller “Liberty Stands Still,” starring Wesley Snipes, Linda Fiorentino and Oliver Platt, written and directed by Kari Skogland.
