Heath Ledger (“The Patriot”) has closed a low- to mid-seven-figure deal to topline 20th Century Fox’s “Sin Eater” for writer-director Brian Helgeland (“Payback”).
The supernatural romantic thriller reteams Ledger and Helgeland, who worked together on Columbia Pictures’ “A Knight’s Tale.”
Ledger will play a young priest who assists a female detective in investigating a case involving a corpse covered with religious symbols.
Craig Baumgarten will produce, with Fox senior production veep Michael Andreen overseeing the project for production prexy Hutch Parker. Pic is tentatively skedded to start lensing in early 2002.
Helgeland sold the story idea for “Sin Eater” to Fox five years ago for $1 million against $1.5 million. Helgeland also penned the script for the upcoming Fox/Regency Entertainment co-production “Daredevil” with helmer Mark Steven Johnson.
Ledger’s participation in “Sin Eater” would seemingly preclude a role that he’d been recently circling in Lion Rock’s “Bulletproof Monk,” toplining Chow Yun-Fat, from producers Terence Chang, John Woo and Michael Yanover.
Ledger recently worked on “Four Feathers” for Miramax and Paramount and Lions Gate’s “Monster’s Ball.”
Both Ledger and Helgeland are repped by CAA.
