Screenwriter Marc Klein (“Serendipity”) has been hired to pen the feature adaptation of Melissa Banks’ bestselling short story collection, “The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing” for Catch 23 Entertainment.
Reese Witherspoon (“Election”) came onboard to star in and produce the project two months ago (Daily Variety, Jan. 23). Pic will combine two stories, “The Worst Thing a Suburban Girl Can Imagine” and “My Old Man,” into a single tale.
Comedy-drama will follow a young woman’s journey through the New York publishing world and her relationship with one of its luminaries as her father battles a terminal illness.
“Serendipity,” which stars John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale and Molly Shannon, will be released by Miramax this summer. Pic marks Klein’s first film in a three-pic deal with Miramax. Klein is currently writing the romantic comedy “Instant Message” for Warner Bros./Village Roadshow; pic is in development for Jay Roach (“Meet the Parents”) to direct.
Suzanne Warren, Catch 23’s senior VP of production and development, and Bobbi Padilla, who recently was promoted to coordinator of production and development, will oversee the project with Debra Siegel, Witherspoon’s producing partner.
