Inside move: Minghella brings ‘Mountain’ to Cruise

Civil War pic has attracted A-list interest

Tom Cruise is in discussions to star in “Cold Mountain” for director Anthony Minghella, who adapted the screenplay from the bestselling 1997 novel by Charles Frazier. Pic is a co-production between MGM and Miramax Films.

Although negotiations have not yet begun, the role Cruise could take is that of a wounded Confederate soldier in the final days of the Civil War who leaves what seems to be his deathbed to walk home to North Carolina and the woman he loves.

Among the names that have been floated for the plum role since Minghella became attached to the project in 1997 are Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks and Daniel Day-Lewis.

The pic will be produced by Minghella and Sydney Pollack’s Mirage Enterprises with Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa’s Bona Fide Prods.
