Lion grows 'Blonde' roots

The Lion has fallen in love with a blonde.

Just two weeks since the release of the Reese Witherspoon starrer “Legally Blonde,” MGM chairman and CEO Chris McGurk says the studio is already planning a sequel and a possible sitcom based on the comedy.

In its first 10 days domestically, “Blonde” has earned $43.5 million. With a budget just shy of $20 million, says McGurk, that puts the comedy on track to be among MGM’s 10 most profitable films ever.

Witherspoon is intrigued by the possibility of a sequel, but there’s no commitment on her part. However, a repeat perf would almost certainly mean a hike in her retainer.

The realization that blondes have more fun was a highlight in an MGM conference call with analysts and press July 27. Despite the new luster of its bubbly heroine, the studio reported a $35.9 million loss in the second quarter.
