Indie Spirit renamed for Cassavetes

Awards to debut at 2002 ceremony honoring indie filmmakers

Independent Feature Project/West has redubbed its annual Independent Spirit Award for best feature under $500,000 as the John Cassavetes Award, in honor of the late filmmaker.

“The IFP/West board of directors wanted to acknowledge John Cassavetes, whose dedication to making meaningful film with limited resources paved the way for many of today’s filmmakers,” said IFP/West executive director Dawn Hudson.

The award will debut at 2002 Independent Spirit Awards, the annual event honoring independent filmmakers.

Submissions for this year’s awards must be received by 5 p.m. on Oct. 12. For information call (310) 475-4379 or visit www.ifpwest.org.
