Heston pic tries for Cannes bow

Gam Film lead producer of $4.4 million English-lingo pic

MANAUS, Brazil — Producers of Charlton Heston starrer “Rua Alguem 5555,” filming here in the rain forest, are aiming for a Cannes 2002 bow.

Italian indie company Gam Film is the lead producer of the $4.4 million English-lingo pic about Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, played by Heston, with partners Total Entertainment of Brazil and Focus Film of Hungary.

Helmer Egidio Eronico (“Metropolitan Fairytale”) was among the scribes who adapted German journalist Peter Schneider’s novel “Father,” based on the true story of Mengele’s son Rolf’s 1977 visit to his fugitive father. Working title refers to Mengele’s address in the state of Sao Paulo.

Producer Gherardo Pagliei said Medusa will distribute the pic within Italy. Gam is negotiating world rights with five U.S. companies, he said.
