Finnish media co. buys Dutch distrib

Deal part of VNU consumer sell-off

AMSTERDAM — Dutch film distributor RCV Entertainment has been sold to Finnish media group SanomaWSOY.

RCV has been hived off as part of the sale of Dutch media conglomerate VNU’s consumer products division.

Over the last couple of years, the 22-year-old RCV has dropped its arthouse trappings and become an aggressive mainstream distributor. The company posted sales of 90 million guilders ($38 million) in 2000.

RVC president Jan Kouwenhoven told Daily Variety new ownership is unlikely to alter RCV’s brief. “It will be business as usual,” he said.

RCV will come under the aegis of newly-formed Sanoma Intl., which will be run by Theo Bouwman, the former head of VNU’s consumer magazine division.

SanomaWSOY’s main business is print – newspapers and magazines – but 3.5% of its sales come from film and TV, including multiplex builder Finnkino and Channel Four Finland.
