NEW YORK — Famke Janssen will play the lead female role in “I Spy,” joining Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson in the Betty Thomas-directed Columbia Pictures action-comedy.
Janssen’s casting to a Col pic comes after she had to ankle another Columbia effort, the currently shooting “Men in Black 2,” for personal reasons. Those issues have been addressed, and she will be ready to shoot “I Spy” when lensing begins in mid-September in Budapest.
Based on the TV series that ran from 1965-68, the premise teams a government agent with a professional athlete recruited to be a spy. Pic is produced by Jenno Topping, who partners with Thomas in the Tall Trees banner. Mario Kassar and Andy Vajna are executive producers.
Spy vehicle will be Janssen’s first since playing a memorable villainess who could snap spines with her aerobicized thighs in the 1995 James Bond film “GoldenEye.” Thesp most recently starred with Michael Douglas in the Gary Fleder-directed New Regency thriller “Don’t Say a Word,” which opens Sept. 28.
She’s repped by Industry and CAA.
