Capstone Pictures has greenlit surfer pic “Local Boys” as the first film in its three-picture deal with German film production and sales arm EuroArts.
A comedy/drama set against contemporary surf culture, “Boys” is budgeted at around $4 million. Capstone partner Ron Moler will helm the pic, skedded to start lensing in September.
Moler previously directed “The Runner.” He was also a producer on “Bachelor Party,” “I Love You to Death” and ‘Endless Summer 2,” and he co-founded the Aspect Ratio advertising agency.
Screenplay was written by Moler and Keoni Waxman (“The Highwayman”). No thesp talent has been attached.
Bonds of three
Capstone was founded last August by Moler and producers Jennie Lew Tugend (“Free Willy”) and Elliot Rosenblatt (“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”). Under the deal with EuroArts inked earlier this year, Capstone agreed to make three pics over an 18-month period with co-financing from the German entertainment conglom.
The first pic on its slate was to be “State of Emergency,” with Artist Robinson slated to helm, but Capstone pushed production on that pic to 2002 following changes in financing. It is unclear if Robinson will remain on board.
