BVI Oz comes to ‘Defense’

Pic stars Caine, based on Edgeworth's 1792 gallows play

SYDNEY — BVI Australia has picked up helmer Bruce Beresford’s “Boswell for the Defence” for Oz and New Zealand, with other territories pending for sales agent Beyond. Pic stars Michael Caine, Samantha Morton and Michael Gambon.

Set in 1792, story features a drunken old lawyer facing the impossible task of defending a young woman condemned to the gallows following her escape from penal colony Australia.

Due to lense in London beginning in April, the confrontational drama is an adaptation of Patrick Edgeworth’s West End play. The film’s financed at less than $10 million by Germany’s MBP for producers Nik Powell (“The Crying Game”) and Mark Pennell. Beyond will launch pic at AFM but expect sales at Cannes when footage is available.
