Local comedy “Mr. Bones” has narrowly beaten worldwide phenom “Harry Potter” at the box office in its opening weekend in South Africa.
“Mr. Bones” scooped 2.97 million rand ($271,521) on 87 screens against “Harry’s” $270,357 on 88, according to distrib United Intl. Pictures.
The $4 million pic, conceived by, co-written by and starring comedian Leon Schuster, the territory’s most successful filmmaker, follows a white boy who grows up to be a witch doctor.
