Beta nabs German blockbuster

Kirch Media's film distrib'n division wins int'l sales rights to 'Schuh'

BERLIN — Kirch Media’s film distribution division Beta Film has acquired international sales rights to local blockbuster “Schuh des Manitu.”

Although Constantin’s comedy/western has been the biggest Teutonic movie in years, its newly gained status as Germany’s most successful film ever was put into question Wednesday by Berlin-based Rialto Film.

Company, which produced what had been the most successful local film of all time — the 1985 comedy “Otto — Der Film” — released viewer figures from the former East Germany indicating pic is still the reigning champ.

While German distrib like to judge a movie’s performance by the number of its viewers, “Schuh,” which has garnered $45 million so far at the box office, has still made more money.

Pic, produced by Michael Herbig’s HerbxFilm, will be on offer at the upcoming Mifed film market in Milan.
