SYDNEY — “Babe” helmer George Miller’s 10-year dream of building a screen culture hub beside Sydney Harbor, opposite the iconic Opera House, is closer to being realized.
The Sydney City Council will vote to pic one among several architectural designs for a Moving Image Center proposed to share the existing Museum of Contemporary Art site.
With re-development costs pegged at between A$80 million and A$100 million ($40 million to $50 million), Miller is confident he can glean $7.5 million toward building the film center within the site.
Miller says he will try to persuade Oz talent such as Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett to contribute to construction costs. “People who are practitioners understand the importance of refertilizing the soil,” Miller says.
