Argentinian fest endures tax flap

World Brief

Proposed government tax hikes dampened spirits at Argentina’s Mar del Plata film fest, where Polish drama “Te Ja, Zlodziej” (“It’s Me, the Thief”) took top prize.

Jose Miguel Onaindia, director of the national film institute INCAA, said he would urge distributors not to pass on the 15% sales tax on cinema and artistic events to the public.

But he cast doubt on press reports that the government planned to phase out a separate tax on tickets that funds back-end subsidies to the industry.

The March 17 announcements came on the penultimate day of the successful 10-day fest that attracted more than 10,000 spectators daily.
