Amiel drives to ‘Core’

'Entrapment' helmer replaces Hyams

Director Jon Amiel has come onboard to helm “The Core” for Paramount Pictures — one of several projects in the vein of “Journey to the Center of the Earth” in development around town.

Amiel last directed “Entrapment.” The ICM-repped helmer replaces Peter Hyams, who at one time was in negotiations to direct the pic. “Core” is due to start shooting Dec. 10.

Pic’s producer, David Foster (“The Mask of Zorro”), is developing a draft with co-producers Sean Bailey and Cooper Layne; Layne also penned the initial draft of “Core.” Project is being supervised by Par VP of production Alex Young.

The sci-fi thriller centers on a group of “terranauts” recruited to pilot an experimental ship to correct a potentially planet-crushing flaw in the Earth’s core caused by a chemical waste reaction.
