‘Amelie,’ ‘Wedding’ span Vancouver fest slate

'Atanarjuat,' 'La Libertad' to unspool

VANCOUVER — “Amelie From Montmartre” and “Last Wedding” will bookend the 16-day 20th Vancouver Film Festival running Sept. 27-Oct. 12, two days longer than last year.

Other films unspooling are “Atanarjuat” (The Fast Runner), the first feature in the Inuktitut language of Canada’s Arctic, and a slew of pics in less obscure tongues, including “La Libertad” (Freedom) by first-time helmer Lisandro Alonso, part of a spotlight on new feature films and docus from Argentina.

The fest opens with the romantic comedy “Amelie” directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and ends with helmer Bruce Sweeny’s “Last Wedding,” a black comedy about middle-class Vancouver life.

Zachararias Kunuk’s “Atanarjuat,” which screens Sept. 28, was the winner of the Camera d’Or for Best First Feature at Cannes this year.

This year’s fest has six main programs, including Dragons and Tigers, touted as the largest slate of Pacific Asian films shown in North America.

The Canadian Images section will give local filmgoers the largest collection of Canuck pics booked anywhere.

The fest will show 320 films at 440 screenings from 50 countries at eight theaters. The full fest lineup will be announced Sept. 5. About 120,000 are expected to attend the event, which includes a trade forum running Sept. 26-28.
