THERE IT WAS, in the Jan. 26 ads for “The Wedding Planner”: a quote from Curtis Waller of MTV Radio, hailing the film as “The best date movie of the year!” Clearly, Mr. Waller knows that this phrase sounds snappier than “The best date movie of the past three weeks!” But it also raises some questions.

Last June, Jeff Cornell of MTV Radio praised “Shaft” as “The best movie of the summer!” A month later, Grant Stiff of MTV Radio said “Loser” was “The best comedy of the summer!”

So the questions are these: Is everyone at MTV Radio always so enthusiastic? And who are these people anyway?

The answer to question two: These people are new blurbmeisters. For nearly a decade, Reel Life has saluted the often-unheard-of men and women who are quoted in newspaper ads. Studios need these quotes: It’s their way of saying, “Hey, don’t take our word for it — these guys ‘n’ gals really liked our movie.” These blurbbers are just being helpful, and we salute them.

So, here they are, the most notable blurbs from the year 2000. Congrats to all of you.
