A ‘Well’-made plan

Pic kicks off Sullivan-Projector first--look pact

CANNES — Sullivan Entertainment, the Canadian film and TV studio founded by filmmaker Kevin Sullivan and Trudy Grant, has signed a first-look deal with London-based Projector Prods., the indie production company headed by British actors Trevor Eve and Sharon Maughan.

First pic to be produced under the deal will be “Tiger in the Well,” based on Philip Pullman’s best-selling novel, which Eve and Maughan will exec produce. U.K.-based Mary Barlow, managing director of Sullivan Entertainment Europe who brought the project into the company, will handle international sales on the pic.

Projector and Sullivan are expected to co-produce two or three films over the next two years in the $10 million-$15 million range; pics will be filmed in the U.K. and at Sullivan Entertainment’s studios in Toronto.

“We are looking to grow within the international marketplace and our shared visions for quality and character-driven stories make this a perfect match,” Eve said.

“Well,” set in the late 19th century, is story of a fearless and resourceful young businesswoman forced to confront her own ignorance about London’s rampant poverty, the plight of Jewish immigrants in London and the struggle of the working class.

Projector, formed in 1997 by Eve, has produced such projects as “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” starring Kate Beckinsale and Ian Holm, and “Cinderella.”

Company is producing “Miss White in New York,” written by Charles Wood, being produced by Eve and Therese Pickard, and a radical reworking of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” for U.K. broadcaster Channel 4.

At Cannes, Sullivan is repping its animated “Anne of Green Gables” project and “The Piano Man’s Daughter,” the Gothic drama based on Timothy Findley’s novel, starring Stockard Channing, Christian Campbell and Wendy Crewson.
