Valencia honors ‘Sweet Dreams’

22nd film fest wraps Oct. 25

MADRID — Saso Podgorsek’s portrait of life in 1970s Yugoslavia, “Sweet Dreams” won the Golden Palm Tree at the 22nd Valencia Int. Film Festival which wrapped Oct. 25.

The Silver and Bronze Palm Trees went to Ilan Duran Cohen’s tale of sexual ambivalence “La Confusion des genres” and Magdi Ahmed’s Egyptian coming-of-age tale, “Asrar el banat.” Spaniard Sigfrid Monleon’s “Island” took best first film plaudit.

Buzz pics included “Tangos Robados” from former Bertolucci co-scribe Eduardo de Gregorio and Spanish pic “Dripping” by Vicente Monsonis.

The revitalised eight-day fest saw a significant makeover under new director Jorge Berlanga with upped admissions, a European sidebar, and tributes to Spanish filmmakers.
