‘Tar Angel’ to open Montreal fest

Chouinard's pic is the tale of Algerian family in Canada

TORONTO — Canadian film “L’Ange de goudron” (Tar Angel) has been chosen to kick off this year’s Montreal World Film Festival.

Directed by Denis Chouinard (“Clandestins”), “Tar Angel” is the tale of an Algerian family living in Montreal. On the verge of obtaining Canadian citizenship, the family is thrown into chaos by the rash actions of the restless son.

Pic, previously announced as being in the competition, stars Zinedine Soualem and Raba Ait Ouyahia.

The 25th Montreal World Film Festival runs Aug. 23 to Sept. 3.
