AFI fest opening to go ‘Dark’

Event to close with 'Monster's Ball'

The 15th annual AFI Fest in Los Angeles will open Nov. 1 with the U.S. premiere of the Sony Pictures Classics release “Dark Blue World,” from helmer Jan Sverak. Event will close Nov. 11 with the world premiere of Lions Gate Films’ “Monster’s Ball,” starring Billy Bob Thornton, Halle Berry and Heath Ledger.

Screenings will be held at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

The festival’s centerpiece gala on Nov. 6 will showcase “Lantana,” also from Lions Gate, starring Anthony LaPaglia, Barbara Hershey and Geoffrey Rush.

Headed by fest director Christian Gaines, the 2001 festival runs Nov. 1-11 and will be headquartered at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. Previous AFI Fest premieres include “You Can Count on Me” and “Amores Perros” (Love’s a Bitch).
