‘Sides’ picked by Miramax

Pic to be adaptation of Ravetch play

Miramax Films has acquired feature rights to the Joshua Ravetch play “Off Sides,” which Ravetch will adapt. Pic will be produced by the Film Colony, which has a first-look deal with Miramax. The two companies most recently teamed to produce “The Cider House Rules.”

A contemporary drama about egomania in today’s sports world, “Off Sides” focuses on the collision between academia and athletics. Pic will follow a talented young college quarterback who can’t pass his exams and what happens when university administrators do a full-court press on a professor in hopes of forcing her to look the other way, against her moral judgment.

Film Colony principals Richard Goldstein and Gary Binkow will serve as producer and executive producer, respectively.

Binkow attended a staged reading of the play in Hollywood that starred Robert Forster, Sharon Tay, Irene Roseen, John Sofgee and John Acosta and was directed by Ravetch. Binkow then brought it to the attention of Miramax co-prexy production Meryl Poster and creative exec Michelle Sy.

Ravetch, who also serves as New Line Cinema’s VP of production resources, previously sold the spec “Hollywood and Vine” to Mike Lobell Prods. His play “Girders” was optioned by Fred Zollo and Jay Harris, who are planning a Broadway production for later this year.

The scribe also penned “Mainland” with Peter Rader for Universal Pictures and is the author of another play, “Beacon,” that will receive a stage production in Los Angeles later this year.
