Euros band together on Bornedal’s ‘Dina

Wassmo adaptation follows 19th century Norwegian woman

BERLIN — Cameras have started to roll on “I am Dina,” the latest pic by “Nightwatch” helmer Ole Bornedal. Germany’s Gemini Film is co-producing the Euro project, which stars Gerard Depardieu and Marie Bonnevie.

In addition to Gemini, Teutonic financing for the pic’s $12 million budget is coming from the Apollo Media film fund and the North Rhine-Westphalia state film subsidy board Filmstiftung NRW.

Norway’s Northern Lights, Egmont, Nordisk Film, Sweden’s Felicia Film and France’s Mandarin Film are also co-producing.

Pic, based on the novel “Dina’s Book” by Herbjorg Wassmo, concerns a 19th century Norwegian woman unhampered by social conventions.

Pernilla August (“Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace”) and Christopher Eccleston (“Gone in 60 Seconds”) also star in the film, which is shooting through June.

Gemini, Apollo Media and the NRW film fund also partnered on Alan Rudolph’s “Investigating Sex,” which was shot in Berlin last year.

The Cologne-based Gemini recently formed Intl. West Pictures, a financing and production joint venture with Germany’s Commerzbank.

The new outfit has raised $40 million for its 2001 slate and has inked a cooperative agreement with Los Angeles-based producer Brad Krevoy for two films this year — Steve James’ “Joe and Max,” which looks at the rivalry and friendship between boxing legends Joe Louis and Max Schmeling during the Nazi era, and Mort Nathan’s “Boat Trip,” a comedy about girl-chasing studs who accidentally book themselves on a gay Caribbean cruise.
