‘Fast,’ ‘Cats’ rule tame B.O. o’seas

'Others,' 'Diary' showing legs in races abroad

In a sluggish weekend overseas, “The Fast and the Furious” and “Cats & Dogs” put some zip into the Australian B.O. while “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” took the crown in the U.K. with unexceptional figures but was spooked by the third lap of “The Others” in Spain.

Actioner “The Fast and the Furious” stole an estimated $1.6 million in four days from 174 locations Down Under, ahead of Warner/Roadshow’s critter caper, which fetched $1.3 million on 285 screens. Roadshow reported that “Cats & Dogs” beat the bows of “Chicken Run” and “Dr. Dolittle 2.”

“The Princess Diaries” fell by 33% in its soph session in Oz, penning a fair $1.3 million in 11 days; however, BVI expects it to rally on weekdays, with school kids on vacation in two states. “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” surfaced with a watery $110,000 on 189, overshadowed by those animatronic pets, but, again, BVI is hoping for a holiday uplift.

Steven Spielberg’s “A.I.” conjured up roughly $1.8 million Friday-Saturday on 423 in Blighty, plus $423,000 in previews. Sci-fier picked up an estimated $983,000 in two days on 271 in Spain, trailing “The Others,” which snared $1.4 million on 271. Poisonous word of mouth sent “A.I.” plunging by 53% in Australia, where the 11-day tally is a soft $1.4 million.

‘Rouge’ in the pink

“Moulin Rouge” is generating good vibes in its third stanza in the U.K., orchestrating an estimated $2.1 million Friday-Sunday, down only 19%, hoisting the market total to a terrif $12.1 million.

Stablemate “Planet of the Apes” set a company-opening record in India, munching on $485,000 on 107, and eased by 35% in Italy, scoring a handy $3.8 million in 10 days.

In Germany, the best of the rookies was “The Animal,” which notched a mediocre $636,000 Thursday-Saturday on 358.

Showing remarkable stamina, “Bridget Jones’s Diary” held sway in Germany, ringing up $1.3 million in its fifth romp on 489, followed by the 10th outing of Western spoof “Der Schuh des Manitu” ($929,000 on 563) and the second of “A.I.” ($865,000 on 546).

‘Knight’ hot in Mexico

Sony’s “A Knight’s Tale” ruled in its second joust in Mexico, capturing $474,000 in two days on 271 (up 16%), eclipsing the third round of “Original Sin” ($204,000 on 220) and blah freshmen “Angel Eyes” ($193,000 on 150) and “Kiss of the Dragon” ($158,000 on 194).

“A Knight’s Tale” debuted in Brazil with a fair $246,000 in two days on 201, No. 2 behind the third weekend of “Scary Movie 2.” The Antonio Banderas/Angelina Jolie headliner “Sin” didn’t set Latino pulses races as Fox estimated that its Argentinean preem netted $160,000 in four days on 50 and Brazil minted $275,000 in three days on 127.
