CANNES — In a rare Australian pre-purchase of a European film, Dendy Films has acquired Oz rights to French director Francois Ozon’s “Eight Women” from French sales company Celluloid Dreams.
It was also pre-bought at AFM by Italy’s Bim.
Pic, produced by France’s Fidelite Prods. is a musical comedy starring a bevy of French actresses including Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, and Emmanuelle Beart.
“For really top-notch product, you have to pre-buy,” said Dendy’s Troy Lun. The company pre-bought Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s current B.O. hit “Amelie From Montmartre” at Cannes last year, and Pedro Almodovar’s “All About My Mother” in 1999.
Dendy was the first English language distributor to pre-buy Thai cowboy movie “Tears of the Black Tiger,” two weeks before Cannes.
Celluloid Dreams’ Hengemeh Panahi refused to say which other territories have pre-bought “Eight Women.”
