CANNES — Ambitious Spanish producer Jose Magan has launched a new production and international sales company, Dolores Pictures, based out of Los Angeles and Madrid.

Magan is currently talking up a $12 million project, “Guerrero, the Adventure,” which is set in 16th century Latin America and is “a cross between ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ and ‘Dancing With Wolves,’ ” he said.

Maria Lidon is attached to direct from a script by Spanish sci-fi writer Juan Miguel Aguilera. Pic is skedded for a March 2002 shoot.

“Guerrero” turns on the true story of a Spanish soldier, Gonzalo Guerrero, who survives a shipwreck, is captured by native Indians and finally becomes the chief of their tribe.

Dolores is backed by private Spanish investors. Dolores’ first pic is the $4 million, English-lingo “Stranded,” starring Vincent Gallo. Pic is produced with the Magan-owned Niggeman Indiefilms and Stefan Nicoll’s Guerrilla Films.

“Stranded” is being sold at Cannes by Sogepaq.
