Oscar winner comes up short

Dudok de Wit nabs TV for shortest acceptance speech

Michael Dudok de Wit, who nabbed Oscar gold Sunday for animated short “Father and Daughter,” also ranked as this year’s winner of yet another Academy shorts competish: shortest acceptance speech.

Dudok de Wit, who won a high-definition TV set for clocking in with an 18-second list of “thank yous,” told the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences he will donate the set to a children’s charity.

In second place was “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” art director Tim Yip, who fell nine seconds behind Dudok de Wit.

In an effort to control the length of the awards telecast, producer Gil Cates first tempted the nominees with the TV prize at the Acad’s annual luncheon held March 12. He had also pleaded with the contenders to keep speeches short, and in return, promised that the Acad would post all “thank yous” on the Web. He kept both promises.

According to the Academy’s Oscar.com site, a bevy of winners, including Marcia Gay Harden, Benicio Del Toro and Cameron Crowe, did in fact follow suit on Cates’ online suggestions and submitted speeches to be posted on the site.
