Viv U, Interplay ink vidgame distrib deal

Vivendi Universal Publishing has inked a deal to serve as the exclusive distribution of all PC and console vidgame titles published by Interplay Entertainment. Titles include upcoming games based on Warner Bros.’ “The Matrix.”

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the deal runs through 2003 and includes all titles except “Neverwinter Nights.” Interplay is expected to benefit greatly from Vivendi Universal’s marketing and distribution capabilities. Company publishes the popular “Baldur’s Gate” and “Descent” franchises, as well as several games based on “Star Trek.”

“Interplay has a steady track record of developing strong franchise titles that have already established a loyal following in the gaming community,” said Philip O’Neil, senior veep of sales, Vivendi Universal Interactive Publishing North America. The division publishes gaming titles under the Blizzard Entertainment, the Flipside Network, Sierra and Universal Interactive monikers. “The addition of Interplay to our distribution portfolio is another example of how we are strategically broadening our market position and creating partnerships in which both parties benefit from the other’s key strengths.”
