Sales break 'Phantom Menace' record in Germany

LONDON — Universal Pictures Germany has sold a one-week record 100,000 DVD copies of “Shrek.”

Previous record holder was “Star Wars: Episode I — the Phantom Menace” for Fox Home Entertainment.

Universal is also banking on the film breaking records in the VHS department. With over 380,000 cassettes already issued to German retailers, the studio expects to overtake the record for bestselling VHS, currently held by “Gladiator,” which has sold 400,000 copies in Germany.
