Rightscenter plans Fair bow

Application can submit, track info on books and manuscripts

Publishing and entertainment site Rightscenter.com has upgraded its rights management application and will be debuting it at next month’s Frankfurt Book Fair.

Launch of Rightscenter Enterprise 2.0 and company’s attendance at Frankfurt coincide with org’s two year anniversary. Company will be represented with a booth on the main floor and in the agents center in order to maximize its presence, in consideration of the expected complexities of negotiating this year’s fair in the wake of last week’s terrorist attacks.

Application allows publishers, agents, scouts and rights managers to submit and track information on books and manuscripts via any standard Web browser. Newest version for publishing users includes an easier interface and features such as improved viewing and databasing control and permissions management. Besides trafficking in manuscripts, users can also archive contracts and deal memos and track royalty payments. Average cost to users is $250 per title.

Rightscenter also introduced a Hollywood film directory earlier this year to benefit film studios and dramatic rights agents. Studios and production companies that subscribe are charged based on the size of their companies. Directory shortcuts the rights info process by providing buyers immediate agency and availability information as well as allowing them to search titles via a number of options including genre and story elements. Agents can also register studio interest on materials not yet available.

Rightscenter clients include HarperCollins, the Brockman Agency and Robert Gottlieb’s Trident Media Group. Film subscribers include Mario Kassar and Andy Vajna’s C-2 Pictures and Casey Silver Prods.

Changes were made based on the suggestions of users in both the publishing and film industry, according to Rightscenter co-founder and CEO Jim McHugh.

Despite layoffs, Rightscenter has managed to avoid the shakeups that other dot-coms have felt. Anticipating the need to shift strategy, McHugh has also made the software available for licensing so that businesses can use them internally and customize if necessary.
