Opera covered in Web accord

Upfront, backend compensation included

The American Guild of Musical Artists announced that it has reached an agreement with opera companies on an industrywide pact covering the Web release of past, present and future video operatic and ballet presentations.

“This Internet agreement is intended to expand the audience for opera and ballet and to make it more accessible to younger, electronically oriented members of the audience,” said Alan Gordon, AGMA’s national executive director.

The accord provides singers, dancers and production personnel with opportunities for upfront and backend compensation. The deal parallels a similar understanding recently ratified by the American Federation of Musicians.
