B&N to sell books on TV

Cyberbiz Brief

The online division of Barnes & Noble has partnered with satcaster DirecTV and interactive TV technology developer Wink Communications to launch an e-commerce TV channel to sell books.

The service, available on channel 496 for customers of DirecTV Interactive, enables satellite TV viewers to purchase the top 100 best-selling books on B&N Web site any time using their remote controls. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it’s likely that DirecTV and even Wink may receive a percentage of Barnes&Noble.com‘s sales from the service. DirecTV has more than 10 million customers.

The B&N.com channel joins Instant Weather by the Weather Channel, ESPN Today, and the DirecTV Interactive Center as the fourth interactive channel available to customers with Wink-powered receivers manufactured by Thomson under the RCA brand. It’s the first e-commerce operation to use the service. More are likely to bow before the end of the year.
