Autodesk takes plunge into streaming media

Cyberbiz Brief

Software maker Autodesk has inked a deal to acquire Media 100’s streaming media software offerings for $16 million in cash. Autodesk will use the acquisition to bolster its popular content creation software tools sold under the Discreet moniker and used by much of the f/x industry.

Under terms of the deal, San Rafael, Calif.-based Autodesk acquires all intellectual property rights, as well as branding rights of Media 100’s CineStream and Cleaner streaming media software solutions.

The product acquisition forms the foundation of Autodesk’s entry into the streaming media market. Discreet customers will now be able to create, distribute, repurpose and publish media content for consumption via the Internet, corporate intranets and devices such as cell phones and PDAs.
