Big day for DVD debuts

'Snow White,' 'Godfather' hit shelves Tuesday

HOLLYWOOD — In what may turn out to be one of the biggest days in the four-year history of the DVD format, Disney released “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” Tuesday, the same day that Paramount released its “The Godfather” trilogy and Universal Studios announced record first-week sales of “The Mummy Returns.”

Disney is believed to have shipped more than 4 million copies of “Snow White” to retailers, nearly the same number as the record-breaking 4.5 million units Universal delivered of “The Mummy Returns.”

Paramount shipped between 1 million and 2 million units of “The Godfather,” according to sources; the five-disc set was selling in most stores for approximately $70, about twice the price of the other two.

Beating ‘Gladiator’

U reported that “Mummy Returns,” released Oct. 2, sold more than 2 million DVD copies to consumers in the first week, surpassing sales of last year’s “Gladiator,” a DreamWorks title distributed by U.

Total combined VHS and DVD sales of “The Mummy Returns” exceeded first-week sales of “Toy Story 2,” according to Universal.

In fact, first-week sales of the action sequel were 70% higher than video sales of the original in 1999.
