Pic preps for video four weeks after release
Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment will release “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within” on video Oct. 23. Announcement comes less than four weeks after the movie opened at theaters.
The second summer pic based on a videogame, pic has grossed just $32 million, less than a fourth of the $130 million generated by Paramount’s “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” which is also expected to be released on video in the fourth quarter.
The studio is proceeding with plans for an elaborate double-disc special DVD edition, which may be better suited to the digital origins of the movie.
The supplemental material will include features that allow the user to re-edit scenes and participate in multiple “workshops” on the visual effects.
Other extras on the DVD set with a suggested list price of $29.95 include a “mini-movie” of Aki’s dream, an alternate opening sequence, a musicvideo, and two audio commentaries by directors and artists.
A VHS edition of the movie will be priced for rental only.
