Scribes’ and studios’ lips sealed

Minimal info offered on 11th day

Contract talks between Hollywood writers and studios continued into Friday night with no comment as to whether negotiators were near a deal or an extension.

With talks in their 11th day, the two sides continued to issue only minimal information about the status of negotiations at the Writers Guild of America West headquarters in Hollywood. Talks began Jan. 22 with only one break on the following Sunday.

Prior to the negotiations, the WGA insisted that if there were no deal at the end of two weeks, they would then stay away from any further bargaining until a month prior to the May 2 contract expiration. But on Jan. 22, a few minutes after the talks started, WGAW prexy John Wells backed off on that threat and admitted his side would extend but only if significant progress had been achieved.
