SAG candidate declines Gilbert’s endorsement

Leads to confusion, sez McConnell

HOLLYWOOD — Thanks for your support, but I’ll manage without it.

That’s the response Screen Actors Guild board candidate Russell McConnell has given to presidential candidate Melissa Gilbert’s endorsement.

“Although I welcome support from as many SAG members as possible, the appearance of my name on Melissa Gilbert’s campaign literature and Web site is leading to confusion as to which slate I’m on,” McConnell wrote to Gilbert. “Because the only slate I’m supporting is the one I’m on, i.e., Valerie Harper’s Actors Moving Forward, I’m respectfully asking Melissa to remove my name from the list of those she’s endorsing.”

McConnell, who is running for a Hollywood seat, was not part of Gilbert’s “Restoring Respect” slate but was one of six candidates she endorsed due to “character and leadership.” Gilbert was not immediately available to respond.

Ballots for the SAG election go out a week from today and must be returned by Oct. 31.
