‘LiLi’ offers hip quips

Virtual VJ to become int'l phenom

An animated skein featuring a futuristic VJ has become a favorite with Asian viewers, with its popularity spanning the entire continent.

“LiLi: Version 2.5” is based on MTV’s first interactive VJ, LiLi (which means “pretty” in Mandarin). The program was launched in July last year, with LiLi taking viewer requests and adding her own spiky wit between music tracks. Since then, better technology has improved her movements and added a quirky flying sidekick, BeiBei.

Viewers can’t seem to get enough of the virtual VJ. “LiLi: Version 2.5” garners almost double the rating of any of MTV’s other shows, and she receives more than 10,000 email requests every month.

“LiLi’s” format can be easily adapted to suit different languages in MTV’s different markets. Local versions of the show air on MTV Southeast Asia, MTV Mandarin (Taiwan and China) and MTV India, with further expansion planned.
