SAG presidential candidate Valerie Harper has added James Garner, Sarah Jessica Parker and Gregory Peck as endorsers but lost George Clooney.
As with Richard Dreyfuss earlier in the campaign, Clooney has shifted gears to neutral after being identified as a Harper supporter. Rival Melissa Gilbert recently named Kirk Douglas as an endorser but was forced to retract.
Harper is set to appear Monday at a panel on runaway production at Sotheby’s in Gotham. Event is co-sponsored by SAG and the Creative Coalition.
Harper supported the SAG board vote to seek a government investigation of Canadian trade practices for possible imposition of countervailing tariffs on subsidized overseas productions. “The issue is perhaps the most serious facing actors, so exploring every possible remedy is clearly in order,” she said.
In a related development, SAG prexy William Daniels criticized Gilbert for her recent disclosure of SAG staff comment to the board on the tariff question. Gilbert, who is a board member, claimed the staffer had said there is no chance the government will take action; Daniels said staff comments should remain confidential.
“I would have thought she would know this is a breach of confidentiality,” Daniels said.
