Candidate requests contribution warning

Gilbert voices concern over tax-deductible donations

Screen Actors Guild presidential candidate Melissa Gilbert, revisiting an issue from the 1999 campaign, has asked that all candidates be warned against soliciting tax-deductible contributions.

Gilbert made the request to SAG prexy William Daniels, who referred it to SAG’s election committee, and rival candidate Valerie Harper, who was not immediately available for comment.

Daniels had solicited such contributions in the 1999 election but then-president Richard Masur obtained an opinion from the AFL-CIO that the donations would not be tax-exempt.
