MADRID — Burgeoning Spanish film and TV production company Morena Films and Produce Plus, the recently created production arm of Spanish pay TV service Canal Plus, are preparing a $20 million, English-lingo TV drama series.
The series, “Gotica,” links two of the youngest and most ambitious players in Spanish production. It also marks the first big project from Produce Plus, which has announced a number of more modest film, fiction and docu co-productions with regional pubcasters in Spain.
Shooting in Northern Spain beginning next summer, “Gotica” is an action-suspense series set in the 19th century over 22 one-hour episodes. Its central character is a journalist who investigates unsolved mysteries around Europe.
Looking for partners
Alvaro Longoria, CEO of Morena’s TV division, is in co-production and co-financing talks with U.S. studios and local partners.
Headed by Juan Gordon and Longoria, Morena Films has already co-produced the $22 million English-lingo series “Queen of Swords,” partnering with Canada’s Fireworks Entertainment. The swashbuckler was picked up for the U.S. by Paramount Domestic TV. Telefonica Media took rights to Spain and Latin America.
