Indie exec shutters PPM
MADRID — Marking further media concentration in Spain’s TV sector, well known indie exec Francisco Rodriguez is shuttering production-distribution house PPM Multimedia in order to head up animation at Spain’s burgeoning mini-major Filmax.
Rodriguez’s formal title at Julio Fernandez’s Filmax has yet to be announced. His responsibilities, however, will cover the development of animation projects, international sales and coordinating co-production and services on third-party projects at Filmax’s animation studio Bren Entertainment, which launched in February.
“With big groups now moving into the sector and owning broadcasters there are increasingly few distribution outlets for smaller operators such as PPM,” Rodriguez told Daily Variety.
The recruitment of the 41-year-old exec is a coup for Filmax. Launching PPM Multimedia in 1990, he rapidly turned his company into a versatile international production broker and distrib of TV fare, focusing increasingly on animation product.
A young exec who rapidly became one of Spain’s animation sales specialists, Rodriguez will bring Filmax selected product from his PPM catalog and a wide web of overseas contacts, instanced by PPM’s Claymation series, “Koki,” “Snailympics” and “Capelito.”
