Prod’n trio banks on ‘Sagwa’

Animated series based on Tan book

MONTREAL — Canadian animation producer CineGroupe, the Children’s Television Workshop and IF/X Prods. are set to co-produce the animated series “Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat” for PBS.

The show is based on the children’s book of the same title penned by bestselling author Amy Tan (“The Joy Luck Club,” “The Kitchen God’s Wife”). The initial order is for 40 half-hour episodes, with a budget of $12 million, and PBS will begin airing the show daily in the fall of 2001.

Tan and artist Gretchen Schields, who illustrated the book, will serve as creative consultants on the project.

The show will follow the adventures of a spirited and curious cat named Sagwa who tries to find her place amid the time-honored traditions and culture of ancient China.
