The NFL is courting the MTV crowd with its game-time lineup, while the music cabler will reciprocate with an NFL-themed week of programming.
MTV’s teen hit show “TRL” will air a one-hour “TRL Super Bowl 2000” live from the NFL Experience, the NFL’s interactive theme park, in Atlanta on Jan. 29. Carson Daly will host the show, which will feature sports and musical celebrities. ‘N Sync will perform live.
During the week leading up to the Super Bowl, MTV will also air a special NFL-themed version of its “Say What? Karaoke” show with sports figures as judges, and five special NFL editions of “MTV Jams.”
The NFL is also holding a series of “NFL Under The Helmet” concerts in Atlanta on the Thursday and Friday preceding the Super Bowl, featuring 98 Degrees and Busta Rhymes. The NFL is also developing an “NFL Under The Helmet” tour, which should launch in 18 months. “It’s about connection with our fan base,” said David Newman, VP of events for NFL Properties.
Meanwhile, the Super Bowl pregame show will include the eclectic mix of Madonna, the Smothers Brothers, Tina Turner and Travis Tritt.
